1. Project Outline
Alpine Trekking Pty Ltd seeks submissions from suitably qualified companies for the fundamental design
for a trekker\u2019s hut and an electrical heating system, to be built at a specific site on a walking track in the
Australian Alps. Figure 1 shows the basic layout for the design. The basic design is a wooden A-frame
supporting a steel roof (shown in black) with two side walls within the A-frame, one gable end has a door
and a window and the other (not shown in Figure 1) has a window only. (The placement of the windows
and door is flexible.) The walls and internal ceiling of the hut are made from plywood (shown in green).

1.1 The purpose of the hut
The floor plan of the hut (within length L and width W) must be designed to:
\uf0b7 accommodate a minimum of 12 adult trekkers sleeping on double bunks
\uf0b7 provide sufficient floor area for storage of equipment (not between bunks)
\uf0b7 provide sufficient floor area for cooking
\uf0b7 provide sufficient floor area for movement

The hut is to be heated by two electric-oil heaters, powered by a micro-hydro generator run by a nearby
stream.
Detailed design requirements are specified in the following pages, including the design parameters (by
name), the design goals, design constraints and the types of equipment that can be selected for the design.
Students please note \u2013 read the IMPORTANT NOTES on the last page of this document and
note the comments regarding the completion of individual assignments in italics.
